Marzamemi is an enchanting fishing village, once home to fishermen. On the main square, its tonnara still stands majestically, saluting a splendid sea view. This visit is a walk through the nature reserve of vendicari, an important marsh species for migratory birds. The reserve preserves some ancient ruins, among these a medieval tower from the 15th century built by Pietro d’Aragona known as the Swabian tower, a tonnara and a salt pan.
The nature reserve “Vendicari Wildlife Oasis” was established in 1984 by the Sicilian Region. It is located precisely between Noto and Pachino (province of Syracuse) with a territory that covers about 1512 hectares. Inside the reserve, an entire ecosystem lives undisturbed. Often you will find yourself in front of breathtaking landscapes, dense vegetation that suddenly opens up to a crystal clear sea, with very long and golden beaches, which in a few hundred meters become overhanging rocks on a deep sea.
